HOW TO PREVENT SKINCARE PRODUCTS FROM PILLING AFTER APPLICATION

HOW TO PREVENT SKINCARE PRODUCTS FROM PILLING AFTER APPLICATION

Have you ever wondered why some skincare products seem to roll off your clients’ skin instead of absorbing beautifully? This frustrating issue, known as skincare pilling, can make even the most well-planned skincare treatments feel like a wasted effort.

By avoiding pilling in your protocols and home care regimens, your clients will see better results and have more confidence in your aesthetic expertise.

WHAT IS SKINCARE PILLING?

Skincare pilling occurs when products sit on the surface of the skin instead of absorbing properly, creating those annoying little flakes or rolls. The most common causes of pilling are:

  1. How the products are applied

  2. The compatibility of the ingredients used

  3. The quality of your skincare products

Pilling doesn’t just ruin your carefully crafted application process; it can also prevent products from fully penetrating the skin, compromising their effectiveness.

COMMON CAUSES OF SKINCARE PILLING

To avoid pilling, it’s important to first identify why it happens. Below are the primary culprits.

1. INCOMPATIBLE PRODUCT COMBINATIONS

Some ingredients don’t work well together when layered. For example, water-based and oil-based formulas can repel each other, causing products to pill.

Here are some ingredient combinations to be mindful of:

  • Oil-based primers and water-based moisturizers or serums

  • Heavy oils layered over lightweight, water-based products

  • Powdery or fast-drying sunscreens applied over thick creams

The key is to ensure products share similar bases or textures to promote compatibility.

2. USING TOO MUCH OR TOO MANY PRODUCTS

More isn’t always better. Applying too much product often leaves a thick layer sitting on top of the skin, increasing the likelihood of pilling. It's also important to avoid layering too many different products at once. Overloading your routine with multiple products can prevent proper absorption and cause irritation or buildup.

Skincare products are typically formulated to work with specific amounts, so a pea-sized dab of serum or moisturizer should be effective for most users.

 3. INCORRECT LAYERING

The wrong application order can compromise your client’s treatments and skincare routine. Ideally, products should be applied from the thinnest to the thickest consistency. Starting with heavy creams may block the absorption of light serums, leading to product buildup and clumping.

Use the GlyMed 4-Step System as a guide for perfect product layering:

  1. Cleanse: Remove makeup, oil, debris, pollutants and dead skin cells

  2. Treat: Target specific skin conditions with effective ingredients

  3. Balance: Rebuild, restore and rejuvenate the skin with vital nutrients

  4. Protect: Protect the skin from free radicals and ultraviolet rays

4. SKIN TYPE FACTORS

Your client’s skin type and condition also play a role. For example:

  • Oily skin: Too much product can mix with natural oils, creating a slippery surface that prevents absorption.

  • Dry skin: Flaky skin can trap products on the surface rather than letting them absorb properly, increasing the likelihood of pilling.

5. LOW-QUALITY PRODUCTS

Using pharmaceutical-grade skincare products will make all the difference. These formulations are designed with advanced ingredients that absorb seamlessly into the skin, minimizing residue and pairing well with other products in the protocol or regimen.

Unlike lower-quality alternatives that often contain fillers or poorly balanced ingredients, high-quality professional products will give you a smoother application.

HOW TO PREVENT SKINCARE PILLING

Now that you know the causes, here’s how you can prevent pilling and ensure products absorb properly.

1. APPLY PRODUCTS IN THE RIGHT ORDER

Layer products from thinnest to thickest. Start with lightweight serums, follow with moisturizers and finish with sunscreens as outlined in our 4-Step System. This simple change makes a huge difference in how well each product absorbs into the skin.

2. USE THE RIGHT AMOUNT

Avoid overloading the skin with excess product. Remember, with most skincare formulas, a pea-sized amount or a thin layer is all you need to achieve optimal absorption.

3. PAT, DON’T RUB

For products like sunscreen or serums, avoid vigorously rubbing them into the skin. Instead, gently pat them in. Patting helps the product absorb without turning into pills or flakes.

4. ALLOW EACH PRODUCT TO ABSORB FULLY

Patience is key when layering skincare. Be sure to wait at least 30 seconds to a minute in between each step to give the product time to absorb into the skin and attach to its surface before applying the next layer.

5. EXFOLIATE REGULARLY

Dead skin cells can act as a barrier, preventing products from working effectively and increasing the chances of pilling. Regular, gentle exfoliation and cleansing can smooth the skin’s surface and improve product absorption.

6. MIND YOUR INGREDIENTS

Double-check ingredient lists and avoid layering products with clashing formulas. For example, avoid using a lightweight water-based serum followed by an oil-based cream. Choosing products that complement each other can significantly reduce the risk of pilling.

THE FINAL STEP TO A SMOOTHER ROUTINE

Pilling shouldn’t stand in the way of your clients’ skincare treatments. Understanding how to layer and combine products correctly will give your clients the results they’re looking for and build their confidence in your skills.
